The comprehensive course Positive Psychology and Mental Health facilitates the student, health and wellness coaches, present and future mental health professionals, nurses, social workers, counselors, and therapists, who want to further develop their skills in the mental health niche with an understanding of the principles and concepts of positive psychology. This course is of value to anyone interested in living with greater mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
With the advent of positive psychology, there has been a significant shift in the focus of mental health research and practice. In its core understanding, positive psychology recognizes happiness and well-being as “essential human skills”. Positive psychology, an evidence-based approach to well-being, focuses on a person’s strengths, abilities, talents, relationships, positive emotions, positive experiences, and intrinsic motivation.
Students will gain knowledge and practice in how we can enhance our internal capabilities and make the best of our present. Rather than focusing on symptomatic therapy and treatments, positive psychology centers around emotional stability, expectation management, and fruitful thinking. In today’s challenging world, positive psychology goes hand in hand with traditional mental health interventions.
This course provides knowledge and practice about positive psychology and mental health with an approach to integrative mental health care.
Upon completion of this course, the coach/student will be able to:
- Students will be able to describe the emergence, development, and growth of positive psychology with an emphasis on mental health and well-being.
- Students will be able to define the PERMA theory of well-being and distinguish between hedonic, eudemonic, subjective, psychological, and social well-being.
- Students will be able to explain the VIA Inventory of Strengths and characteristics of highly valued goals and their relationship with well-being.
- Students will be able to explain how positive emotions such as gratitude, appreciation, hope, mindfulness, savoring, flow, and optimism are conceptualized within positive psychology.
- Students will be able to explain the main theories of emotional intelligence and recognize the implications of the psychology of giftedness, creativity, wisdom growth mindset, and grit.
- Students will be able to name concepts of self-esteem, self-efficacy, adaptive defenses, and functional coping strategies to enhance personal well-being.
- Students will be able to explain processes that account for the association between positive social relationships and well-being, including social support, Love 2.0, cooperation, attachment, empathy, altruism, kindness, meaning in life, capitalization, and forgiveness.
